Big Learning’s mission is to operate instructional programs in language, sciences, and engineering for PreK, elementary, and middle school students in Montgomery County, Maryland. Our standards for value: We offer programs that offer children immediate educational benefit and enjoyment, while building powerful knowledge, skills, and competencies for a lifetime of learning. Our programs expand children’s horizons, and build excitement about learning and a thirst for understanding. Our commitment to equity: We strive to make our programs available and to provide value to children and youth across the income spectrum, and to improve equitable access to enrichment.

French Beginner B

Grades: 2nd - 5th Ages: 7 - 12

Description

New and continuing beginners explore French together in a fun, informal, language immersion setting. We’ll learn new vocabulary and expressions, gain confidence in listening and speaking, and build a foundation for future language learning. Topics this session include favorite sports and pastimes, the alphabet, telling time, farm animals, prepositions, breakfast foods, songs, and cultural notes!

Native French speakers teach our classes and each session includes different topics, themes, and hands-on activities with a workbook to encourage practical use of the language and strengthen early literacy skills.

Beginner Level is a full-year program offered in one or more sessions over the course of the school year. We encourage children to participate for a full year of French, but a child may join for just one session. Beginner B is appropriate for both new and continuing Beginners.

Physics of Sound and Flight: Good Vibrations!

Grades: 3rd - 5th Ages: 9 - 12

Description

Strum, buzz, and pop! How does sound travel? How do your ears hear? Investigate the complex auditory system and how things fly in this fun hands-on adventure! Build a guitar, kazoo, pan flute, and whistle from scratch and simulate sound waves while exploring pitch, tones, and frequencies. Then discover the science behind flight and test different model airplanes, kites, and rockets while exploring aerodynamic forces!

Physics of Sound and Flight: Hums, Buzzers, and Whirligigs

Grades: K - 2nd Ages: 6 - 8

Description

Shake, rattle and go! Toot tunes on test tubes and buzz on kazoos to explore how sounds are made, how they travel, and how we hear them. Make yourself a giant pair of ears and a model of your voice box. Create rhythms and waves in different ways to explore the concept of vibration. Build and experiment with different fliers that soar through the air and compare them to parachutes that create drag. Which design will fly the best?

Spanish Advanced

Grades: 4th - 5th Ages: 9 - 12

Description

Learning another language and about another culture is an enduring and powerful life skill that allows us to communicate and make meaningful connections with others.

Keep on going! Our community and explorers theme sets the stage for an exciting learning adventure in Spanish with topics like geography and travel, the marketplace, clothing, transportation, and favorite weekend activities! With a map and an imaginary suitcase, we’ll plan a trip and navigate new surroundings, visit the rain forest, explore Madrid, create a menu and learn the capital cities of countries where Spanish is spoken. Students continue to express themselves in another language with expanding confidence and make progress in reading and writing!

Our classes are taught by native speakers of the language in a fun, small-group immersion setting. Each session includes different themes with hands-on activities and a workbook to reinforce learning and to strengthen early literacy skills in Spanish.

Advanced Level is a full year program offered in two or more sessions for groups of 6 or more students. The prerequisite for this level is one full year of Intermediate or Intermediate/Advanced Level, or equivalent previous experience with the language.


Spanish Beginner

Grades: 2nd - 5th Ages: 7 - 12

Description

Learning another language and about another culture is an enduring and powerful life skill that allows us to communicate and make meaningful connections with others.

Let’s open a window and make discoveries! Big Learning classes are taught by native speakers of the languages they teach. Children will build practical Spanish skills in a fun, small-group, immersion setting with lively games and activities. We’ll explore customs and traditions, greetings and expressions, numbers, calendar, weather, colors and shapes, body parts, favorite pets, the family, and a birthday party.

Beginner level is a full-year program offered in two or more sessions. Sessions include different topics and themes so that children can learn new vocabulary and build language skills throughout the school year. We encourage children to participate in Beginner level for a full year, however a child may choose to participate in just one session.

Each session includes an accompanying workbook and hands-on activities to promote practical use of the language and strengthen early literacy skills.

This level is appropriate for beginner students who are reading and writing in English.

Spanish Beginner B

Grades: 2nd - 5th Ages: 7 - 12

Grades: 2nd - 5th Ages: 7 - 12

Join us as we continue our Spanish learning adventure in a fun, informal, language immersion setting. Gain confidence in hearing and speaking Spanish, build new vocabulary and expressions, explore new and familiar themes, and practice early reading and writing skills in Spanish. Topics for spring include favorite outdoor games and activities, the Mayan number system, snack time, describing physical characteristics, wild animals, Machu Picchu, prepositions, and more cultural notes!

Native Spanish speakers teach our classes. Each session includes different topics, themes, and hands-on activities with a workbook to encourage practical use of the language and strengthen early literacy skills.

Beginner B Extended is offered in the Spring and is appropriate for students who have participated in at least one 8-week Beginner session.

Spanish Intermediate

Grades: 3rd - 5th Ages: 6 - 12

Description

Learning another language and about another culture is an enduring and powerful life skill that allows us to communicate and make meaningful connections with others.

We’re on our way! Children will gain confidence in speaking, listening, and comprehension, expand their vocabulary, and begin to read and write in Spanish.  Intermediate level classes introduce a broad variety of topics and cultural notes that give children the opportunity to explore customs and traditions, geography, history, and practical use of the language as they practice reading and writing.

Intermediate topics include formal greetings, telling time, the Galápagos, using the Mayan number system, counting to 1,000, seasonal sports and activities, Machu Picchu, the house, typical Latin lunch and snack foods, Tikal, describing physical characteristics, a visit to the zoo, Chichén Itzá, and more!

Our classes are taught by native speakers of the language in a fun, small-group immersion setting. Each session includes different themes with hands-on activities and a workbook to reinforce learning and to strengthen early literacy skills in Spanish.

Intermediate Level is a full-year program offered over the course of two sessions during the school year. The prerequisite for this level is at least one 12-week or two 8-week sessions of Beginner level or equivalent previous experience in the language.

Spanish Introductory: La Gallinita Roja

Grades: K - 1st Ages: 6 - 7

Description

Let’s start speaking! This story-based program taught by native Spanish speakers provides a fun introduction to Spanish where children learn and practice speaking a new language through songs, puppets, games, storytelling, and hands-on activities. This class is designed for students who may not be reading and/or writing yet. Join us this session for our story La Gallinita Roja, or The Little Red Hen.

Each session introduces children to a different story with new vocabulary, topics, and themes. Vocabulary booklets and activities support early literacy skills in the language.

Spanish Young Beginner

Grades: K - 2nd Ages: 5 - 7

Description

Spanish Young Beginner

Let’s speak Spanish together! Children begin to build practical Spanish language skills in a fun, informal, language immersion setting with songs, games, and activities! Some themes this session include picnic foods, animals, greetings, colors, shapes and size, and favorite things we like to play and do. Join us for a language learning experience that lasts a lifetime!

This level is designed for younger beginners and lessons include
hands-on activities and a workbook with less focus on writing to accommodate younger students who may not have completely mastered handwriting.

Appropriate for all K-1st grade students and 2nd graders who are new to Spanish this session.
