Big Learning’s mission is to operate instructional programs in language, sciences, and engineering for PreK, elementary, and middle school students in Montgomery County, Maryland. Our standards for value: We offer programs that offer children immediate educational benefit and enjoyment, while building powerful knowledge, skills, and competencies for a lifetime of learning. Our programs expand children’s horizons, and build excitement about learning and a thirst for understanding. Anatomy: Biological Clues

Grades: 3rd - 5th Ages: 8 - 11

Description

In this exploration of biology and anatomy students will investigate bacteria and fungi that live on classroom surfaces by growing them in a Petri dish and then try to identify them.  Then explore the role of genes in dominant and recessive traits.  Learn about DNA and extract it from cells! 

Try to identify birds and marine mammals by their calls.  Is it a humpback whale or an orca?  Examine an owl pellet and try to identify the owl's major food sources from the bones in the pellet and compare homologous bones across species.

Grades: 4th - 5th Ages: 9 - 11

Anatomy: Jaws and Claws

Grades: 2nd - 3rd Ages: 7 - 9

Description

Everyone has to eat! What can tooth, beak and claw structures tell us about an animal’s diet and how they live?  How are herbivore teeth different from omnivore teeth?  What could you swallow if you had a mouth like a snake?  Examine different teeth and beaks to find out how to bite, chew, and grind your way through your food.  Make a mold of your own teeth, test out the grinding molars of a horse and examine the claws of a raptor and bear. 

Chinese Beginner and Intermediate

Grades: 2nd - 5th Ages: 7 - 12

Description

Open a window to another culture, communicate in another language, and make discoveries!  Big Learning instructors are fluent Chinese speakers and classes build practical language and early literacy skills in a fun, informal language immersion setting with lively games, songs, cultural notes, activities, and an accompanying workbook.

Each session we explore different themes and topics so children can learn new vocabulary and concepts throughout the school year. This level is appropriate for new beginners and continuing students with previous experience. Classes are also appropriate for children who hear and speak the language at home. Our teachers will make assessments and tailor instruction with differentiated activities for students who are ready for more advanced material. As children progress from beginner to advanced, there is more character recognition and writing practice.

Classes are intended for children who are already reading and writing in English.  

French Beginner and Intermediate

Grades: 2nd - 5th Ages: 7 - 12

This level is appropriate for new beginners and continuing students with previous experience. Classes are also appropriate for children who hear and speak the language at home. Spanish Introductory and Early Beginner: Los tres cerditos

Grades: K - 1st Ages: 5 - 7

Description

Let’s speak Spanish! Big Learning instructors are fluent Spanish speakers and children learn and practice speaking Spanish in a fun, informal, language immersion setting with songs, games, movement, storytelling, and hands-on activities. Join us for our fall session story theme Los Tres Cerditos, or The Three Little Pigs.

Each session we explore different stories with varied topics and themes so children can learn new vocabulary and concepts throughout the school year. Workbooks and activities support early literacy skills and encourage practical use of the language. This level is designed for new beginners and is also appropriate for continuing students and children who hear and speak Spanish at home.

This class is intended for students who may not yet be reading or writing.
