Heidi Mordhorst (WHISPERshout Writing Workshop) is a veteran classroom teacher, published poet and Maryland State Arts Council Teaching Artist. Heidi provides language and literacy enrichment programs for ages 4-12 during Out-of-School Time and during school hours. WHISPERshout’s multi-arts enrichment classes offer drama, art, music & movement, and natural science mixed with poetry—the perfect genre for young writers! Class length is 75-90 minutes to allow time for the expert attention required by this creative, academic work in a socially and emotionally rich group setting. At the last class of each session, children present their work to an audience and take home a published product they can share with their families. WHISPERshout Writing Workshop also publishes an online journal featuring poems by kids ages 4-12.

POETRY COMIX
In a small group of about 8-10, we’ll read two recent books that treat poems like mini graphic novels, examining how the authors, Grant Snider and Renee LaTulippe, mix comics and poetry. We’ll use nature as one of our inspirations and try writing in different voices. After some editing, we’ll ink and color some of our best efforts. At the last session, we’ll present our work to families, and kids will take home their own copy of our published poetry anthology.

En un grupo pequeño de 8-10 ninos, leeremos dos libros recientes que tratan los poemas como mininovelas gráficas, analizando cómo los autores, Grant Snider y Renee LaTulippe, combinan las historietas con la poesía. Usaremos la naturaleza para inspirarnos y probar a escribir con diferentes voces. Después de editar, entintaremos y colorearemos algunos de nuestros mejores trabajos. En la última sesión, presentaremos nuestro trabajo a las familias y los niños se llevarán a casa su propia copia de nuestra antología de poesía publicada.
